Here is another first in our series of restaurant reports from different spots in Prague. Today we are going to talk about place named Bittersweet Cafe. Don’t let the name confuse you, my guess is that its owner tried to hint on unusual menu. I went for breakfast there, tried several menu items and now ready to share my impressions. Here I want to note that the whole article covers breakfast menu since it is developed by Chili Ta – the upcoming chef with interesting takes on food recipes starring in Master Chef Czech Republic.
Inside you are met with cozy interior which is nothing like stereotypical looking Vietnamese place. No, the owners decided to create a mixed style where various items are combined together into an interesting composition. This might give you a hint on what to expect food-wise. 🙂
There are several types of tables, the whole place is surprisingly spacious and can fit several groups of people. I like complete absence of music here and it was easy to talk without raising your voice.
The restaurant accepts reservations, so you might want to give them a call in advance just like I did. This place can get full quite quickly by 10am. :/
So, breakfast menu offers a choice out of several items. There is no meat in any of them, but trust me, you won’t miss it – the components match nicely. If you still want some meat, choose from the regular menu after 12 pm.
Everything starts with the drinks choice. There are several types of Vietnamese coffee, I really recommend to try them. On the photo above, you can see Frozen Coconut Milk with Coffee. It tastes good and refreshing in hot weather. I enjoyed my Coffee with Condensed Milk (Nau), and its portion was not enough for my appetite.
In case you are more into lemonades, there is a cool (you get the pun, right, right?) lime lemonade. A very nice choice for hot weather.
Let’s talk about service. It is quite fast and waiters are happy to help you with recommendations. The staff speaks English, Czech, and Vietnamese, so it is easy to communicate. 🙂 The menu is also available in English, no worries.
Now we can move on to the breakfast itself. There are 6 options to chose from, prices vary from 139 CZK to 189 CZK. We decided to try 3 out of 6. 🙂
On the photo above, you can see “Why not Onion for Breakfast”. Under this name, you will find a large toast with roasted onions, humus, and onion chutney with onion paste. Oh, yes, this is egg on top. All this might sound simple, but the final results tastes sooo good. I have to admit – this one takes the well-deserved first place in my records out of three we ordered.
Second place goes to “Morning Wildness”. Here you get a large toast with sweet potato paste, pea pesto, and roasted rice. Of course, there is also an egg on top. Its smell and taste of the fried rice might be enough to replace your need for meat. It is the most expensive one, and the taste is quite specific and surprises with unusual combination.
Third place goes to “Start Fresh”. Personally, I am not a huge fan of bean sprouts which are included here. However, I could still appreciate its interesting combination with an Asian take on it. 🙂
Yes, there is only one toast served, but it is more than enough for breakfast. I am sure you won’t feel hungry after one of these.
All in all, we have a cozy place with delightful breakfast menu created by Chili Ta. It is great to see such unusual combinations out of well-known components. This is not just another avocado sandwich, instead, the chef added an Asian twist and, to my mind, she succeeded. I will surely come back again to try the remaining three breakfast options from Chili Ta. 😉
P.S.: I like these seats at the window, just like the one on the photo below. The metal bars might bother some though. Well, I guess this is the necessary evil for protection.
